CV CONTACT Katarzyna Perlak is a Polish born artist, based in London whose practice employs video, performance, textiles, sculpture and installation. Perlak’s work examines potentiality of affect as a tool for registering and archiving both present continuous and past historical moments.&nbsp;Through her work Perlak employs a notion of ‘tender crafts’, exploring how crafts (heritage and traditions) can be revisited and re-imagined from contemporary feminist, queer and diasporic (migrant) perspectives.&nbsp; She engages 'affective truths' such as myths, tales, dreams, desires, collective memories, and seek to problematise how history is written and traditions are represented. In parallel, the artist investigated the phenomenon of roadside and courtyard shrines — spaces where the sacred intertwines with everyday life, and where religious gesture encounters local invention, improvisation, and craft. Perlak’s practice explores the tensions and dialogues between Catholic aesthetics, a queer gaze, and folk and craft traditions. She works with materials gathered across various contexts: collected on the streets of Catania, found at a flea market in Bytom, or recovered from the dusty corners of her parents’ allotment shed. Together, these fragments form a multilayered fabric in which past, memory, and intimacy are woven into a new narrative. The work was created during an art residency at the Kronika Centre for Contemporary Art in Bytom, Poland, as part of the group exhibition The Queen’s Breasts Carved from Wood (6 September – 17 October 2025) curated by Agata Cukierska i Katarzyna Kalina.From the Middle Ages to today, the figure of the female martyr has embodied the tension between suffering, holiness, and the transgression of traditional femininity. Saint Agatha’s iconography — often showing her with her severed breasts — is one of the most vivid and ambivalent representations of the female body in Christian tradition. Her story concentrates the many meanings projected onto the body: sexuality, nourishment, desire, fear, punishment, and cultural control. The Queen’s Breasts Carved from Wood critically reinterprets Agatha’s legend as a way to examine mechanisms of power over the female body in a phallocentric society. The breasts, central to her symbolism, become a site where identity, violence, sacrifice, and defeminisation intersect. The artists break the legend into its key elements, exploring themes such as the symbolism of the breast, the sexualisation of martyrs, and contemporary perspectives on gender, embodiment, and spirituality. This new, large-scale textile (5.3 x 3.5m) embroidery work is made from bags which the artist’s mother sends her care packages in from Poland to her home in London, UK – it is the artist’s most ambitious textile work to date. Newspaper clippings used to wrap jars and other fragile items are transferred onto the fabric, alongside ‘kitchen wisdoms’ captured through regular conversations with her mum. For Perlak, the work reflects on maternal care, issues of migration and homesickness, and shared political and economic challenges across borders. Co-created with local award-winning film-making organisation First Take and participants from their REEL: Queer programme, the film adopts a non-linear, poetically disorienting structure. Drawing on the aesthetic and affective language of horror – a genre resonant to both the collaborators and the artist – to explore longing and Queer identity. Once a popular destination for wealthy travellers en route to North America via Liverpool in the early twentieth century, the Adelphi Hotel has, over the years, become home to countless stories, legends and myths. Building on these foundational narratives, the artist reimagines the hotel as a vessel for memory, desire, mourning, and transformation. The film features predominantly actors and performers from Liverpool and was shot entirely on location with the cast and crew of REEL: Queer. public solo exhibition. It is part of a series of exhibitions responding to shifting political landscapes in Ireland and Poland curated by Marysia Więckiewicz. For this exhibition, Perlak expands her research into Polish Pajaki—ornamental paper ‘spider’ chandeliers historically assembled for Christian, pagan, and folk celebrations. Traditionally hung as protective symbols within the home, Perlak reimagines them as queer talismans, emblematic of resistance and belonging. Composed of found objects, including artificial flowers, discarded photographs, and second-hand ornaments sourced in the artist’s hometown of Bytom, Dublin and London, these sculptures weave together the personal and the political, nostalgia and possibility. Suspended within the Gallery, Perlak’s Pajaki sculptures require close observation, revealing layers of symbolism and significance embedded within their intricate forms. The sculpture Poplar Time (2025) becomes a meditation on domesticity and the instability that comes with displacement. The ‘spider’s’ base is made of anti-climb fencing material regularly installed around Poplar, an inner-city London suburb where the artist currently lives. The attached constellation of wristwatch parts symbolises temporality and precarity of housing in the area that is undergoing demolition. The visual vibrancy of Ruta Time (2022), with its fusion of platform shoes, kitsch flowers, and sparkly masks, intertwines folk traditions with a queer aesthetic of abundance, revealing complex and multifaceted histories. In her textile works, Perlak delves into vernacular stories and proverbs, referencing words and phrases that convey resilience and highlight the emotional weight of what is lost or misinterpreted in translation. The tapestry titled Cos za Cos (2025), loosely translated as ‘you win some, you lose some,’ foregrounds the challenges of fully articulating one’s identity and the associated feelings of loss and longing. It incorporates the iconographic motif of a deer, a symbol commonly found in Polish ethnoart and associated with folk culture and mass-produced imagery. Perlak’s engagement with kitsch recurs throughout her practice, interrogating the boundaries between authenticity and sentimentality. Building on her Bated Breaths series (2020–ongoing), Perlak’s embroidered handkerchiefs feature individual and collective phrases, that serve as intersections of personal history, shared memory, and cultural etiquette. Traditionally used to absorb bodily fluids and suppress emotions, handkerchiefs also function as tools of communication— from folk dances to coded LGBTQ+ identity markers. These textiles carry layered symbolic meanings, simultaneously personal and communal. In this exhibition, the handkerchiefs evolve further, embodying the shared economic precarity linked to cultural displacement. Wszędzie dobrze, gdzie nas nie ma (2025), meaning ‘the grass is always greener,’ expresses the emotional landscape of migration—homesickness, longing, and the imagined elsewhere. The repeated act of stitching the same sentence over and over becomes a meditative ritual, an intimate yet powerful expression of searching for home, capturing a stillness found in compulsive repetition. The Biennale asked how, and why, the act of making home can be a form of resistance and survival within the context of hostile environments— including those of racism, homophobia, ableism, climate catastrophe, and political austerity.&nbsp; In a multidisciplinary display of archival methodologies, Katarzyna Perlak invites conversations to form between queer and Catholic aesthetics as well as folk practices. Perlak’s commission comprises a series of embellished tablecloths and Pajaki sculptures (also known as spiders), which are traditional Polish paper chandeliers that are hung to protect the home. Continuing to develop a practice the artist refers to as “Tender Crafts”, the works engage traditional folk-craft methods from queer and migrant perspectives. My Grandma’s Doilies (2022) are a series of tablecloths originally made by, and inherited from, the artist’s late grandmother, Agnieszka Ponanta. The tablecloths have been hand-printed with family photographs and further hand-embroidered by the artist with phrases and motifs that reflect on matrilineal inheritance, grief and queer identity. The tablecloths, invested with the communal labour of their makers, become a proxy for communion and conversation with a lost loved-one. Though held in a different time and space, the objects bear the mark of intergenerational touch, knowledge and absence. The artist dedicates the work to her grandmother. Historically crafted for Christian, Pagan and folk celebrations, Pajaki are a material manifestation of Polish tradition. Weaving together an archive of kitsch ephemera, some parts of which were found in secondhand markets in Brent, other parts in London and in Poland––from fake flowers to found film photographs and discarded scratch cards––Perlak’s Pajakis entangle these traditions with a queer aesthetic of abundance in order to make visible their complicated lineages.
